The Monkey fly has exploded onto the scene of salmon fishing and is a big favorite with many anglers. It’s a fly with attitude and is famous in Salmon Rivers all over the world. You can tie them up on any tube you like with a body that suits your fishing. You can use a plastic tube to help fish the fly on or near the surface like a sunray or a metal tube or tungsten to get it down. It’s a deadly fly in all variations at any time of year and a must have fly in your tube box. Don't leave home without them.
This fly is very simple and easy to tie. If you are a beginner, this is a very good place to start. You will quicly be able to tie a killer fly, that will catch fish in almost any water condition. This SBS guide was originally made by artisan fly tyer: Neil Stephenson.
Remember there are no rules and you can play with the colors and all as you like. You can get the monkey hair you need in our shop here.
The recipe for a simple Dee monkey Fly:
Tube/Hook: You can use any tube you like and you can also tie on a hook.
Body: Nothing or something of your own choise. (in this guide there is no body tied in)
Underwing: Polar bear or Monkey hair or Fox or something.
Wing: Black Monkey Hair, Peacok hearl.
Hackle: Yellow hen og schlappen feather.
Eyes: Jungle cock (can leave out if you don’t have)
First, Secure the tube in the vice. Tie in the thread and wind a small bed for the hackle and wing. Prepare a bunch of polar bear or Monkey hair or Fox or something and tie in so that it reaches the end of the hook and trim the waste. Prepare another bunch of Polar Bear or Monkey hair or Fox or something and tie in so that it is the longer than the layer below. Trim off the waste. Rip a bunch of Yellow Schlappen fibres from a feather or simply tie in a yellow hen hackle instead. If Schlappen, then tie these in as a beard hackle, they should just reach the end of the tube. You can also tie a wound hackle if preferred.
Tie in a few strands of Silver Angel Hair slightly longer than the wing. Prepare a bunch of black Monkey Hair and tie this bunch in on top of the underwing. This will be for the final length of the fly.
Tie in two strands of Peacock herl, or Peacock Krystal Flash, over the wing so that they form a nice arch.
Select and prepare a pair of Jungle Cock eyes. Tie in one either side of the wing. Fold back the staks and trim off the waste. Form a neat head and whip finish. Apply several coats of thin clear varnish to produce a smooth shiny head. Many will agree, that the jungle cock is for the pleasure of the tier. It does give the fly a much better look and feel - does the Salmon care? we will never know :)
And now you have a Dee Monkey fly. This fly is tied with a wing of Colobus Monkey hair, hence the name. This is a killer fly!
